The cow makes the program

Everything we do starts with the cow. Before performance, before looks, before anything a sale catalog can print, we ask one question of every animal: what kind of mother cow is behind it, and what kind will it make?

We call the trait we're after Maternal Intelligence — a cow that knows what she is doing. She knows how to be a mother. She knows that when her calf hits the ground, she's to get up and lick it off. She keeps track of that calf, protects it, and shows it what to do. Calving ease, milk and breed-back all matter — but they aren't Maternal Intelligence. That's something you see in how a cow mothers, and it breeds on.

Right beside it sits Longevity. It's an umbrella term, and it's the right one: it covers fertility first, then everything that keeps a cow in production year after year — her feet, her udder, her skeleton, her temperament. A good cow that lasts twelve years beats a great one that lasts six.

We have a definite picture of what that looks like. We like our cows feminine and broody, with lots of rib shape and body capacity, a big hip and a wide pelvis. We like our bulls masculine — high-libido, muscular, athletic bulls that are possessive of their females and keep track of them. When the females look like females and the bulls look like bulls, the program is working.

We don't chase the latest fads. We breed the majority of our herd to highly proven sires backed by pedigrees full of great cows — and we let that discipline compound, generation after generation.

Confidence in our own genetics

Across our programs, every cow is AI'd once, and the cleanup bulls that follow are our own home-raised bulls. That's not convenience — it's conviction. Those bulls come from sires we trust, they were developed right here, and their mothers are in the pasture where we can walk you out to see them. A program that won't use its own genetics is telling you something. We use ours everywhere.

We pride ourselves on finding genetics that thrive in our customers' environments. Every animal here — every program, every age group — is raised on forage, in the hills, in an environment that sorts the good ones from the rest. Cattle are made for their environment; one type doesn't work everywhere. Ours are made for the way our customers run cows — on forage, through real winters and real summers, across the eastern United States.
